(1730-89)
Ukrainian Hasidic rabbi. Initially he engaged in ascetic practices and fasting. After studying with the Baal Shem Tov, he became a maggid, spreading Hasidism in Russia and the Ukraine. He collected money for ransoming Jewish captives and for other charitable ends. He emphasized the importance of the spiritual state known as 'devekut' and upheld the position of the tzaddik.
